For my first visit to Kenya, I thought carefully about what to pack for a stylish holiday look. After all I was going to Nairobi and Mombasa for two and a half weeks.
Having been on holiday to Mexico many times, I knew that the key to dressing well in hot climates is to keep it simple and practical, as well as having a variety of looks and colours for all the photos I’d want to share on social media. I had plenty of light and comfortable fabrics that coordinated well, especially monochrome, white, pastel pink and blue. Although black and navy blue are two of my favourite colours, it wouldn’t have been practical to wear them when regular temperatures were around 30 degrees.
One useful accessory I’d recommend is a light shawl. On the trip I used it to keep the sun off my shoulders, to keep me warm when the temperatures dipped in the evening and even once as a sarong.
One of the biggest delights about travelling is discovering original and inventive fashion you wouldn’t find where you live. On this trip, it was the kikoy (sometimes spelt as kikoi), a traditional cotton wraparound fringed with little tassels, worn in Kenya and other parts of East Africa. I was struck by the range of beautiful, vibrant colours they came in.
Here are some photographs of my holiday outfits. Do you ever find it difficult to know what to wear on your travels? Feel free to share your fashion tips!
